District Level Unit Assessments

All district and summative testing is based on Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills Standards.

Per unit, students take a Unit Assessment provided by the district. The questions are intended to be STAAR aligned (State Standardized Test). The unit assessments include a reading passage from the genre of focus for the unit and 9-15 multiple choice questions for reading and writing skills previously taught. My students track their scores and goal set for each assessment on data trackers kept in the front of their journals.

My original tracker solely documented scores by ones. Upon reflection, I realized I could utilized this as a goal setting device as well and that graphing scores by 5 was more effective.

Adjustments include the goal setting portion with the additional row and marking with a star, as well as the scores shown by 5 percentage points.

Student on grade level setting realistic and attainable goals. Student is consistently reaching and exceeding self-determined goals. I have since been conducting independent reading book clubs with this student to keep them engaged in content and to make learning personal.

Student on grade level regressing in reading performance. This raised red flags for me. After one-on-one conversation, it was discovered the student could not see the board well enough to keep up in class. Once learning of my student's struggle, we were able to get her the glasses she needed and has since been improving.

This student is experiencing inconsistent success on their assessment. Due to performance levels, this student is attending tutorials and receives small group instruction three times a week for thirty minutes at a time to support their learning.

We have a Shout Out Wall for each assessment for students who score a B or higher on the District Check for Understanding. Their names are posted on the board under an alliteration for the Unit Genre. The classroom averages  are also calculated and posted, which creates healthy competition between my blocks.

Our State Summative Assessment will occur May of 2020. All of our District (Unit Check For Understanding) Assessments are in preparation for this exam. Daily our exit tickets reflect the academic vocabulary, sentence stems, and content that will be seen on the STAAR. We utilize the same data tracker for class averages to track growth toward this culminating exam. Previous years data is acknowledged and allowed for our annual Big Academic Goal.

70% of students will pass or master 2020 STAAR.

Goal determined by teacher and students.
