In our classroom, students are seated in collaborative table groups of varying academic levels. This allows for peer teaching and teamwork. High performing students assist struggling peers and in turn become stronger in the content themselves by teaching one another.
Students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs- students identified with learning differences) have an assigned peer partner that works with them daily to accomplish classroom work. Students applied for these "TA positions," which has fostered a community of helpers. Additionally, students identified as special education are included in general education as much as possible. They receive pull out support once a week from the campus SPED coordinator and daily accommodations from their general education teacher.

Classroom Values
Respect
Curiosity
Perseverance

Expectations of respect are mutually agreed upon on the first day of class. Students and teacher sit down to determine the environment they want to contribute to throughout the year. Having three classes of students, my classroom has three sets of Respect Agreements.

In 408, students are encouraged to pursue what interests them. Reading is a versatile content area that can practice ascribed standards and skills across disciplines. An inscribed book of choice is frequently given as a reward. Our learning environment is intended to nurture a life-long learner full of curiosity and problem solving skills.

With my students, I am straightforward. Life is going to give us challenges, and we must be prepared to problem solve. Having the fortitude or perseverance to follow through is crucial for their futures. We utilize sentence stems and self-advocacy strategies to foster this mindset.
