Career Day
It is my hope to provide students with awareness of what opens doors to them. Exposure to a diverse range of career paths previously unknown will broaden their perspective of the purpose of education and provide vision to their daily efforts.
When students think of a career I want them to see themselves in these roles. Therefore, I had students lead our career day rather than officials already in these jobs. By drawing at random varying careers from a "hat", students were able to research different fields and teach one another through presentations. The intention behind a student-led career day was to have students see themselves and their peers beyond the role of student and in these positions. Having students educating one another on future possibilities was powerful to witness. The research that went into their presentations exceeded the standard expectations. I had students bringing in video clips and giving quick bibliographies on individuals in the field. I deliberately selected a list of careers that are less frequently discussed. For example, I immediately had kids calling out, "What is a marine biologist?" and "Miss Cordova, I do not know what a civil engineer is." My response was, "GREAT! That is the point. I want you to experience something unfamiliar and teach your friends about it." Their responses were incredibly enthusiastic.
